Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902)
Elizabeth Cady Stanton as a young woman.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was considered one of the more educated women of her time. She attended Johnstown Academy and Troy Female Seminary, the first educational institution that gave women a college education comparable to men. Like Mott, Stanton was an abolitionist who was opposed to slavery and became a delegate at the Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840. Along with all women there, Stanton was denied a seat at the delegation. Mott and Stanton began to talk of a need for a women’s rights convention and eight years later a future meeting at Mott’s sister’s house, the idea of the Seneca Falls Convention was born.
Stanton was one of the main organizers of the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. She was a driving force behind the Declaration of Sentiments and the Resolutions. She was an eloquent speaker and advocate for women’s suffrage during the convention and over the next 50 years. She wrote a number of articles and books, including her autobiography, in titled Eighty Years and More. Stanton also became friends and colleagues with Susan B. Anthony and the two continued to be a strong force for women’s rights, often speaking together at rallies and other conventions.
